Ego Ella May – What You Waiting For

Ego Ella May drops “What You Waiting For” alongside the announcement of her second album “Good Intentions”, out March 20. The British-Nigerian singer-songwriter’s record arrives six years after her pandemic-era debut “Honey For Wounds” and follows last year’s transitional “FIELD NOTES” project.

The single rides on a languid, broken-beat groove that Ego co-produced with Tom Excell. It’s one of her favourite songs to play live—fun on the surface but carrying a more profound meaning about presence and living in the moment. “Quite simply, don’t wait,” she says. “The time is now.”
The refrain “If not now, when?” became her confidence-boosting anthem. Tumai “Turkish” Dcypha handled the mixing and mastering, giving the track its polished warmth.

“Good Intentions” blends jazz textures, alt-soul explorations, intricate harmonies, and lyrical storytelling. Ego produced it herself alongside Alfa Mist, Wu-Lu, Beat Butcha, LVTHER, Melo Zed, TAVE, Tom Excell and others. The album was guided by introspection and conversations with her inner circle, plus the authors she loves: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Patti Smith, Chinua Achebe, Ayobami Adebayo, and Joan Didion.

After working with Wu-Lu on “What We Do” last year, a breezy love song with Latin-tinged guitars that pushed her into new territory, Ego’s continued to evolve her sound while keeping her distinctive voice unchanged. Her approach bridges old and new soul traditions, creating music that feels timeless rather than trendy.
